Apollo 8 Christmas Eve Message

On this day in 1968, the three astronauts in the Apollo 8 capsule (Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders), charged with going around the moon ten times before returning home, sent the above message to an anxious, angry, confused world – and somehow, for a few moments, everyone came together and saw a wonderous sight, a lunar sunrise.

The year 1968 saw the Democratic National Convention explode in Chicago and give rise to the Chicago 8, the war in Vietnam was consuming 1,200 American soldiers a month,and witnessed the assassinations of both Martin Luther King, and Robert F. Kennedy. And three guys went for a ride around the moon…
