Disrespect by not disagreeing?

Filed under: Politics — Ken @ 2:12 pm

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has decided to let the American People know that she thinks the Republicans are disrespecting not only the President, but also the American people by deciding not to respond to his upcoming “Jobs Plan” speech:

“The Republicans’ refusal to respond to the president’s proposal on jobs is not only disrespectful to him, but to the American people,” Pelosi said.

How? How would it be more respectful to follow the President and (most likely) disagree with his “plan”? Seems to me, letting the President “have his moment” and present his ideas unchallenged is actually fairly respectful, ignoring the Washington tradition of the opposing party insisting on presenting a different view/position.

Pelosi said the party’s “silence” would “speak volumes about their lack of commitment to creating jobs.”

So, by not taking time to respond to the President the Republicans are “speaking volumes” about a “lack of commitment”?

Not surprisingly, Speaker Boehner’s office had a different view of the decision:

But Boehner spokesman Mike Steel said Obama’s proposals on Thursday “will rise or fall on their own merits,” suggesting a GOP response was not needed.

“Republicans are, and have been, entirely focused on job creation. Every member of Congress, and — more importantly — the American people, will provide a reaction to the president’s address,” Steel said.

Personally, I think the President was planning to run his speech right until the start of the night’s football game, so that any GOP “response” would actually intrude on the football game, causing die-hard football fans to blame the GOP for the delay…
